KARACHI, Nov 27: Former international player Mohammad Yasin is due to take charge as Pakistan’s senior squash coach next month, an official confirmed Tuesday.
“The executive board at the annual general meeting of the Pakistan Squash Federation last week approved Yasin’s name. He will be arriving to take charge December 16,” PSF secretary, Squadron Leader Sajid Waheed told SADA.
Pakistan is seeking to revive the sport that has lapsed badly in the country that dominated in the international arena for well over five decades. Pakistan finished eleventh in the last World Team Championship and has no player in the top 25 international players’ rankings.
Yasin, whose brothers Maqsood Ahmed and Mohammad Salim also played at an international level, was active in international squash in the 1960’s and the 1970’s and reached the final of the 1973 British Open where he had to surrender to Geoff Hunt of Australia due to an injury.
Yasin also helped former world champion Jansher Khan of Pakistan as coach.
“Yasin is based in London these days and has sound coaching experience. Only a few things have to be discussed before he starts his job,” he said.
The PSF secretary said that the financial package for Yasin has yet to be finalized.
“Finances are not an issue but he needs to know the venue of training, his assistant and how many players he needs to work with. All this will be decided once he gets here,” said Sajid.—SADA
