MULTAN, Nov 27: Justice M A Shahid Saddiqui of the Multan bench of the Lahore High Court has observed that the police is not competent to charge any tax except those permitted under the law.

The court made this observation while issuing notice to the Multan SSP on the writ petition of All Multan Mini Goods Owners Association.

The association moved the court against the police levy of Rs 100 in the name of police welfare fund on each light transport vehicle entering the city.

The court directed the SSP to submit a report in this regard within a week along with the orders issued by the police department to charge the levy. The court also observed that the police was not competent to open a bank account to deposit such levies.
