CENTURION (South Africa), Nov 26: South Africa’s attempt to press home their advantage against India on the fourth day of the unofficial Test was held up by rain on Monday.
When play ended with 52 overs of the day’s quota still to be bowled, India were 118 for two in their second innings, still needing 216 to avoid an innings defeat.
South Africa declared at their overnight 566 for eight, and their pace bowlers soon found the ball off the seam on a pitch beginning to show signs of inconsistent bounce.
Indian openers Shiv Sundar Das and Connor Williams put on 92 for the first wicket before Williams was caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis off Lance Klusener for 42.
Williams, who looked composed and organised in only his second innings in international cricket, hit seven boundaries off 87 balls.
India went to lunch at 104 for one, then the second session was reduced by nearly an hour and a quarter because of rain and bad light.
When play resumed with the score at 115 for one, India managed to add just a single before Das lost his wicket.
A low, cutting delivery from South Africa captain Shaun Pollock caught the inside edge of the bat and crashed into the stumps.
Das scored 48 off 145 balls with eight boundaries.
At the close, Indian captain Rahul Dravid (11) and Sachin Tendulkar (2) were at the crease.
