PESHAWAR, Nov 26: Police checking of public transport buses in the Hayatabad township has made the life of travelling public miserable.
Policemen posted in the township check a single bus at least at three spots and treat the passengers quite harshly.
As Hayatabad is a posh township, most of the people have their own conveyance and only poor or middle-class people travel in these buses. This is also one of the reasons that the police treat the passengers in an awkward manner.
The Afghan refugees, residing in the Hayatabad area, are often the victims of these cops. The inhabitants claimed that police should check these buses at one point so as to save their time.
However, as there is a complete lack of coordination among the cops deputed inside Hayatabad, at different spots they stop a single vehicle.
One of the passengers said the cops should check a bus at the bus stand instead of checking it at different spots. He added that on the one hand the smugglers and peddlers had been given a free hand to carry their goods to the Karkhano bazaar through Hayatabad and on the other, innocent citizens were being treated in a harsh manner.
An Afghan refugee said he had to take along with him his two children whenever he went out as, he added, by adopting such tactics he avoided the police as normally they did not treat harshly a person travelling along with his family.
Another passenger claimed that the buses moved at a snail’s pace inside Hayatabad and due to police checking a lot more time was wasted. He said first the buses were stopped in phase 2, phase 3 and finally near the outlet of Hayatabad.
People claimed that the police had handed over security arrangements during night to a private security agency to which the residents had to pay monthly fee. They added that on the one hand the police had not been performing its duty and on the other they were causing inconvenience to people through irresponsible checking.
