SUKKUR, Nov 26: All the 218 lift pumps which had been disconnected by the irrigation authorities in Nara Canal, have been regularized following a meeting of the Sindh irrigation, and agriculture ministers at Karachi recently.
District Nazim Sukkur Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that the irrigation officials had been asked to return the seized pumps to the farmers.
He said the action by the irrigation on large-scale had caused great trouble to the growers, because it was affecting their crops.
He said he and Nazims of Khairpur, Mirpurkhas and Sanghar had drawn the attention of the Sindh government, because these lift machines were existent for last 20 years.
He said that after the creation of SIDA, the record had been manipulated, however, the growers had shown their permission letters to the Nazims.
He said that after that it was resolved that the growers be allowed to lift water from Nara Canal, but they would have to maintain check on water-sharing so that the tail-enders do not suffer at their heads.
According to the irrigation experts, the Sindh government decision would severely hit the tail-enders especially in Mirpurkhas division who had been protesting since long against these lift machines through which at least 6,000 cusecs of water is being drained out by the influential landlords.
COP KILLED: A constable of Balochistan police was killed in an encounter with the dacoits in the jurisdiction of Karim Bux police station, Jacobabad, in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
According to the details, the outlaws hijacked two tractors from the villagers on gun point from the border areas of Sindh and Balochistan.
When information flowed to the police picket, set up along the border with Balochistan. Police parties both from Sindh and Balochistan chased the dacoits and an encounter took place which continued for half an hour and as a result Ghulam Muhammad son of Habibullah Khoso, a a police constable of the police picket situated at Sindh and Balochistan border was killed.
The outlaws, however, fled along with one tractor leaving behind the other tractor, which they had snatched. Investigation was on.
RROMOTED: IGP Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, promoted the entire seven men police party which took part in the encounter with the dacoits on the night of Friday and Saturday in Sukkur, in which three alleged dacoits were killed.
SSP Sukkur Mr. Din Muhammad Baloch told Dawn on Monday, that a sub-inspector was promoted to the rank of Inspector, two head constables were promoted as ASIs while the four constables were promoted as head constables. However, he made it clear that DSP Shoukat Ali Abbasi was not promoted and he was given a letter of appreciation.
