Jayasuriya happy over Kandy result
KANDY (Sri Lanka), Nov 25: Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya celebrated their historic second Test victory over the West Indies Sunday happy to have put some poor results at the Kandy ground behind them.
“We were determined to do well in Kandy because we didn’t have a good record here,” said Jayasuriya.
“It was not easy getting wickets in the second innings, but we kept bowling to a line and maintained the pressure all the time. The ball bounced and turned in the first innings but not in the second.”
Sri Lanka’s victory gave them an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series.
“We thought 83 overs was sufficient to bowl out the West Indies in the fourth innings on the fifth day,” said the captain.
“We were happy with the runs we put on the board but we didn’t want to give them too many overs. We also had in mind Brian Lara and Carl Hooper who were capable of taking the game away from us.”
Match-winner Muttiah Muralitharan took six for 81 in the second innings to go with his 4-54 in the first.
Hooper, recognising the spinner was the difference between the two sides, said: “It was a big blow for us when we lost Brian Lara.
“He was the key wicket for them straight after tea and that put us under a lot of pressure. We knew it was always going to be hard to ask the tailenders to see it out. In the end we just didn’t play well enough.”—Reuters
