Muralitharan spins Lanka to series win over Windies
KANDY (Sri Lanka), Nov 25: Sri Lanka broke the ‘Kandy jinx’ with a 131-run victory over the West Indies on an absorbing fifth and final day of the second cricket Test here on Sunday.
The hosts, who had lost their last three Tests at this venue, owed their success to off-spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan who grabbed six wickets Sunday as Sri Lanka celebrated their maiden Test series over the West Indies by taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead.
West Indies, needing 322, were all out for 190 in the penultimate mandatory over with ‘Kandy Man’ Muralitharan taking six for 81 to add to the four wickets he claimed in the first innings. He ended with match figures of 10 for 135 to take his series tally to 21 over the first two Tests.
Sri Lanka scored 288 and 224 for six declared and West Indies made 191 and 190.
Sri Lanka’s win was marrred to some extent by the controversial dismissal of Brian Lara, who was caught off a bump ball by Hashan Tillekeratne at forward short leg off Niroshan Bandaratilleke by umpire Gamini Silva for 45.
TV replays showed the ball hitting the ground before the fielder caught it as Lara played an ondrive.
The batsman stood his ground and gestured with his arms to the umpire in frustration before walking off.
Lara batted for 136 minutes and his dismissal off the second ball after tea saw West Indies slide to 126 for six when Ridley Jacobs was out for five.
But Marlon Samuels and Mervyn Dillon stuck out a seventh wicket partnership of 59 in as many minutes before Muralitharan broke through by bowling Dillon for 19.
Muralitharan then proceeded to clean up the tail as he grabbed the last three wickets for no runs in 12 balls.
Samuels went on to complete a fine half-century before falling lbw to Muralitharan for 54 scored in 119 minutes with 10 fours.
It was the 31st occasion Muralitharan had taken five wickets in an innings in his career and the fourth successive Test in which he had taken a match bag of 10.
Ramnaresh Sarwarn was the other West Indies batsman to make runs, scoring 48 in two hours before falling to a bat-pad catch.
Sri Lanka batted for a further 100 minutes in the morning adding 96 runs to their overnight total before declaring at 224 for six.
Marvan Atapattu made a top score of 84 in 266 minutes with the help of six fours and with Kumar Sangakkara, who scored 45, put on 87 for the second wicket.
Sri Lanka lost four wickets for 11 runs going for some quick scoring. Leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine finished with four for 65.
