HYDERABAD (India), Nov 24: Medium-pacer Sanjay Bangar grabbed five second innings wickets to reduce England to 163 for nine as their three-day tour game with an Indian Board President’s XI team ended in a draw Saturday.
England, who conceded a 19-run first-innings lead after the Board XI side declared at their lunch score 339 for seven, lost wickets at regular intervals as the paceman finished with five for 32.
Michael Vaughan began shakily and was beaten several times before being bowled by paceman Tinu Yohannan for 18. the visitors then lost fellow opener Mark Butcher, who, playing away from his body, edged Surinder Singh behind to depart for 12.
Left-hander Graham Thorpe (13) was then bowled through the gate by Bangar as England slipped to 80 for three.
Skipper Nasser Hussain’s 38 was the highest score of England’s second innings, which went into a steady slide in the final session. First innings centurion Mark Ramprakash made 32.
Bangar brought about the downfall soon after tea, when he had Hussain caught by a diving Murali Kartik at point.
Bangar struck again in the same over by bowling Craig White (4) with an in-swinger before grabbing his third wicket in seven balls bowling wicket-keeper James Foster between bat and pad for a duck.
Bangar came on for a fresh spell to trap Richard Dawson lbw and claim his fifth wicket when the two captains agreed to end play for the day.
Earlier the home side, 256 for two overnight in reply to England’s first innings of 320 all out, lost quick wickets as the tourist’s bowlers fought back.
Seamer White and uncapped off-spinner Martyn Ball took two wickets each as England dominated the morning session.
Paceman Matthew Hoggard set the tone by removing batsman Jacob Martin for an aggressive 89.
Martin, who shared with Sriram in a third-wicket stand of 202 runs, hit 10 fours.
Left-hander Rohan Gavaskar, son of former Indian batsman Sunil, made his intentions clear when he hammered the slow left-arm of Richard Dawson for a six over long-on and then punished medium-pacer White for two fours in his first over.
Gavaskar and Sriram put on 47 brisk runs for the fourth wicket but once Gavaskar departed, caught and bowled by Ball for 24, the middle order quickly folded.
Sriram fell almost immediately, edging White to wicketkeeper James Foster to end a patient 289-ball innings spanning over six-and-a-half hours and including 16 fours.
