Two fish species face extinction

LAHORE, Nov 24: Mahsher, a popular fish specie once found in the Indus, Jhelum and their tributaries is nearing extinction.

According to the Fisheries department, now its traces are found in these rivers.

“The fish is at the verge of total extinction and if timely steps are not taken it will totally vanish,” says the Fisheries director-general.

Similarly, Kalbana is also an endangered specie in the natural water bodies of the province.

To save these species from extinction, the DG said, experiments on their artificial breeding would be conducted and the seed obtained would be released in these rivers under a stock replenishment programme.—APP
