KARACHI: Overdue results of DAE next month

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 24: The overdue results of Diploma of Associate Engineers’ annual examinations 2000 will be declared in the first week of December, said sources in the Sindh Board of Technical Education.

The examinations of over 5000 candidates, belonging to various technical institutions, were held in Oct 2000, but the results could not be announced for various reasons. Now, the DAE results of first year (morning and evening) and DAE second year (evening) annual examinations have almost been finalized and these would be announced within next ten days, said an SBTE official when contacted on Saturday.

It was learnt that the works pertaining to the results suffered mostly due to the non-availability of senior teachers who were appointed to assess the answer scripts. Majority of the students selected and invited for assessment denied to participate in the process due to their preoccupation, added the SBTE official.

However, insiders pointed out that it were not the teachers only to be blamed, but the entire working of the examination section of the board needed to be reviewed. Other factors that contributed to the delay in the preparation of results were scheme of study, quantum of works, number of subjects offered for education, lack of communication facilities and low rate of emoluments for examination staff, including teachers and other contingency staff required for the conduct of examinations and compilation of results.

It was learnt that many of the teachers preferred not to join in the assessment process due to influence of their superiors at educational institutions, who wanted teachers to continue their teaching in the evening shift programmes, which are run on the self-finance basis and promised more monetary benefits to the teachers.

They pay Rs7 for assessment of one script and thus we could earn only Rs280 per evening, provided we complete the minimum requirement of assessing 40 scripts at a time, said a college teacher. In contrary to that teachers are highly paid for teaching the students of the self-finance scheme in the evening shift.

Talking about the scheme of study and number of papers prepared for examination purposes, the sources said that the board needed 150 to 175 papers for any particular DAE class. The examination centres are scattered throughout the province, while in some cases the number of students in any subject remained nominal, but SBTE has to reach everywhere and conduct the examinations for everybody enrolled with the board.

It was also stressed that the working of the examination section should be computerized so as the head office of the board at Karachi could establish instant communication and get feedback from other centres in the province.

Preparation of question papers, maintenance of secrecy and delivery of those to centres established in the far-flung areas as well, collection of answer scripts and their assessment in due time, and submission of awards and tabulation of marks needed hectic and coordinated efforts, which could not be ensured every time in the given circumstances and facilities.
