GUJRANWALA, Nov 23: A slowdown in construction of a service road and widening of the GT Road has become a permanent hazard to the motorists.
Reports reaching here revealed that the project was started by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) on the orders of the then corps commander and divisional administration in May, 2001. The divisional and district administration got, all filling stations and other encroachments on either side of the GT Road from Rawalpindi Bypass Chowk to Gondlanwala Chowk, demolished.
The work had been held for the last one month due to unavoidable circumstances. The workers had reportedly built a clay strip in the middle of the road from Rawalpindi Bypass to Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park, adding to the problems of the commuters. Dust suspension around the strip has become positively dangerous to the people already suffering from asthma.
The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other social organizations have urged the authorities concerned to complete the work within stipulated time.
The road should be watered twice or thrice a day so as to save the motorists from any risk of disease, they demanded.
ARRESTED: The CIA police on Friday claimed to have arrested three customs officials who allegedly drove away with a land cruiser and stole official records.
The officials took away Cantonment Board former chairman Shaikh Ijaz Ahmad’s car for not paying customs duty and parked it in the compound of office a couple of months back. The same night, they reportedly took away the car and other goods from the customs office.
The next day, the accused got an FIR registered against Ijaz and his companions, saying they had taken the car and other goods at gunpoint from the office.
During an investigation, the team learnt that the car and computers were taken away by the customs officials. On getting the report, the SSP informed the high-ups of the customs department. The team arrested the culprits from their office.
The arrested included deputy superintendents Naeem-ullah, Shaukat Ali Bhatti and inspector Ghulam Muhammad Bhatti.
Some other officials of the department were reported to be among the culprits. Police are investigating.
HEALTH DG: Punjab health director general Dr Muhammad Yaqoob on Friday visited the DHQ Hospital and reviewed the facilities being provided to the patients.
He directed medical superintendent and doctors to provide better facilities to the patients admitted to various wards.
He said a new Civil Hospital would be established in the district besides expansion of the DHQ premises.
He assured visitors that specialists would soon be inducted in the hospital.
