HYDERABAD, Nov 23: The Institute of Development and Social Practices and Sindh Development Society organized a seminar on “the use of manpuri and its dangerous effects on health and economy” at Budho Palari Goth on Friday.

The speakers expressed grave concern over the use of manpuri and gutka in the villages of Sindh and warned that both were extremely dangerous for the health of the people.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Qasim Brohi said that the use of tobacco was the first step towards other intoxicants.

He pointed out that excessive use of manpuri was extremely dangerous for the health.

Quoting from his personal experiences, he said that many a patient who had fallen ill due to the use of manpuri was living a normal life after they gave up this bad habit.

He said manpuri seriously affected the mouth, heart and lungs.

Addressing the seminar, Nasim Panezai of the IDSP, Quetta, stressed the need for community participation in all the social work, and added that all the evils of society could be eliminated through community participation.

Ms Fahmida Riaz read a research paper on the subject saying that at least 20 million people in Pakistan used tobacco in one or the other form, and added that the use of Manpur and gutka was as dangerous as the use of tobacco in betel leaf.

She said that far too many people were addicted to manpuri, gutka, and Tobacco Paan in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, and Karachi divisions.

She said in the Budho Palari village, 90 per cent of the population including women and children regularly used manpuri, gutka and tobacco paan, and added that no less than Rs30,000 per month was spent on purchasing manpuri in Budho Palari village.

Speaking on the occasion, Sohail Sanghi stressed the need for launching a consistent struggle against smoking cigarettes and using manpuri, gutka, and paan.

RESEARCH: The vice chancellor, University of Sindh, has urged the university scholars to dedicate themselves to research work for the advancement of higher education.

He was presiding over a high level meeting of the academic heads of the university at Jamshoro campus on Friday.

The meeting was attended by all the deans of various faculties, heads of departments, and sectional heads.

The university registrar, Prof Ferozuddin Kazi highlighted the objectives of the meeting.

It discussed and reviewed in detail the schedule of the first semester examination in all the departments, which are being held from Nov 29.

Addressing the meeting, the vice chancellor said that no effort would be spared by the university authorities to provide maximum facilities to the students.

He hoped that the opening of additional counters in the bank would facilitate the students to deposit their examination fees without any pressure.

It resolved to adopt strict security measurers during the first semester examination and decided to set up 15 examination centres at the campus.

Admit cards will be distributed to the students by the departments concerned on Nov 27 and 28.

The controller of examinations, Prof Ali Murtaza Dharejo briefed the meeting about the steps taken by the examination wing for conducting the first semester examination.

BDS EXAMINATION: The controller of examinations, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, has announced the theory programme of second professional BDS (old course) bi-annual examination 2001 which will be held with effect from Nov 26 at the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences.

The Pharmacology, Pathology, and Dental Anatomy papers will be held on Nov 26, 27 and 28 respectively from 10:30am to 1:30pm.

The head invigilators have been authorized to cancel any paper if necessary, which will not be re-conducted under any circumstances.

SPSC: The secretary, Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC), has notified that the commission interviewed eligible candidates for various posts in the health and education department, Government of Sindh, and recommended the names of suitable candidates to the government for appointment.

They included an associate professor medicine BPS-19, six senior registrars medicine BPS-18, and seven female lecturers in English BPS-17.

The SPSC also announced the results of revenue qualifying department examination in which six candidates have been declared successful.

The SPSC further notified that all the eight candidates who appeared in the departmental examination of subordinate treasury account service (accountant) at Hyderabad in Oct have failed in the examination.
