Indian army major among 11 killed in Kashmir


SRINAGAR, Nov 22: An Indian army officer and two Muslim girls were among 11 people killed in clashes in occupied Kashmir on Thursday, police said.

The junior officer died in a fierce two-hour encounter with Mujahideen late on Wednesday at Watsar village, near Handwara township, 85 kilometres north of Srinagar.

“The encounter took place during a cordon and search operation by the army,” a police spokesman said.

A Muslim girl was shot dead by unidentified men at Qamarwari, on the outskirts of Srinagar, police said.

Another Muslim girl was shot dead at Palpora village, near Patan, 30kms north of here, police said.

Police said Indian forces shot dead two Mujahideen in two separate encounters in the Kupwara district.

Three more Mujahideen died in Srinagar and Budgam, police said.

Three Mujahideen were shot dead by the Indian forces in two more encounters in Poonch.—AFP
