Straw arrives to discuss situation


ISLAMABAD, Nov 22: British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw arrived here on Thursday evening from Tehran on a two-day visit to Pakistan.

He was received by Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar on arrival.

Mr Straw is scheduled to call on President Gen Pervez Musharraf and hold talks with Mr Sattar. He is also scheduled to hold a joint press conference at the Foreign Office on Friday.

A report from London said on Wednesday that the basic purpose of Mr Straw’s trip to the region was “to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and to reinforce support to UN-led process to establish a broad-based government in Afghanistan.”

Mr Straw told a 10-Downing Street briefing that “Iran and Pakistan have important roles to play in supporting the UN’s efforts to establish a broad-based government, starting in Germany on Monday.—APP
