NEW YORK, Nov 21: Rookie Mikael Samuelsson snapped Patrick Roy’s shutout streak with his first NHL goal and added another for good measure as the Rangers scored a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday.

Roy was trying to become the first NHL goaltender in 52 years to post four straight shutouts. But Samuelsson halted his streak at 192 minutes, 39 seconds with a shorthanded goal less than nine minutes into the first period.

Theo Fleury, defenseman Vladimir Malakhov and Zdeno Ciger also scored for the Rangers, who have not made the playoffs since 1997 but are 8-0-0-1 in their last nine games.

In Montreal, Andreas Dackell scored with 3:12 remaining as the Canadiens reeled off the final three goals for a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Yanic Perreault got the Canadiens on the board with 7:48 left in the second period, Martin Rucinsky tied it on the power play 12:19 into the third and Dackell won it.

Goaltender Byron Dafoe stopped 22 shots.

Boston, which had won three straight, had ridden some exciting comebacks to the fifth-best record in the Eastern Conference (10-5-3-2).

During their three-game winning streak, they scored at least two goals in the third period twice, winning in overtime against New Jersey and in regulation against Montreal.

They also earned a remarkable 3-3 tie in Chicago on October 28, scoring twice in the last 19 seconds of regulation.

The Canadiens won their second straight and fourth in six games (4-1-0-1).

Tuesday’s results (home team in CAPS):

OTTAWA 3 Vancouver 0

PHILADELPHIA 3 New Jersey 3

DETROIT 6 Nashville 3

MONTREAL 3 Boston 2

TAMPA BAY 3 Anaheim 2

EDMONTON 2 St Louis 0

NY RANGERS 5 Colorado 3
