Wizards suffer 7th straight loss

WASHINGTON, Nov 21: The Charlotte Hornets, despite being without Jamal Mashburn and David Wesley, handed Michael Jordan’s Washington Wizards their seventh straight defeat Tuesday, 95-88.

The losing streak is the longest of Jordan’s career.

The Wizards have won just two of their first 10 games and only Jordan’s former team, the Chicago Bulls, have a worse record in the Eastern Conference.

Mashburn was placed on the injured list and did not travel to Washington after pulling his groin in practice Monday.

Wesley was scratched before the game with a sore foot and is listed as day-to-day.

But Baron Davis scored 16 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter.

Jordan scored 30 points on 13-of-23 shooting.

Jordan has scored 30 or more points in five of his last six games but Richard Hamilton, held to 10 points Tuesday, is Washington’s only other player averaging double figures.

In Indianapolis, after a halftime eruption by coach Isiah Thomas, the Indiana Pacers erased a 21-point deficit and rallied for a 106-102 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, who have lost 21 straight road games.

Rookie Jamaal Tinsley scored a season-high 29 points and handed out 11 assists, Reggie Miller added 22 points and Jalen Rose 18 for the Pacers, who were on their way to their fifth straight loss until Thomas’s halftime rant.

In Toronto, Cliff Robinson made a running jumper and two free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Detroit Pistons edged the Raptors 88-84 for their third consecutive victory.

Robinson scored 22 points and combined with Ben Wallace to force Vince Carter to the baseline for a difficult angle on a potential game-tying shot.

In Dallas, Calvin Booth scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to a 105-97 victory over the Mavericks, who lost their third straight.

Booth, an ex-Mav, signed a six-year, $34 million contract with Seattle during the offseason.

The 6-foot-11 (2.11 metres) Booth, who had been listed as questionable with a sprained right ankle, made 6-of-10 shots and 12-of-12 free throws.

At Golden State, Latrell Sprewell scored 29 points against his former team and the New York Knicks ended a 10-game road losing streak with a 94-70 victory over the Warriors.

The Knicks had lost their first six games away from Madison Square Garden this season and last won a regular-season road game on April 1, when they upset the Lakers.

In Los Angeles, the Lakers cruised through three quarters before missing 8-of-16 free throws down the stretch, but held on for a 98-93 victory over the Clippers.

Kobe Bryant scored 25 points and tied a career high with 12 assists and Shaquille O’Neal added 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers (9-1).

Elton Brand scored 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Clips, who were hosting their Staples Center co-tenants.

In Miami, Wally Szczerbiak scored 22 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves continued the franchise’s best opening with an 80-73 win over the Heat, who have lost six straight.

Terrell Brandon scored 19 points and Rasho Nesterovic added 16 and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves (9-1), whose star Kevin Garnett was limited to 10 points and who were held 24 points below their league-leading average — and still won easily.

In Portland, Walt Williams scored a season-high 31 points, 24 above his average, to help the Houston Rockets end a slump with a 94-87 victory over the Trail Blazers.

Tuesday’s results (home team in CAPS):

INDIANA 106 Atlanta 102

Detroit 88 TORONTO 84

Minnesota 80 MIAMI 73

Charlotte 95 WASHINGTON 88

Seattle 105 DALLAS 97

Houston 94 PORTLAND 87

New York 94 GOLDEN STATE 70

LA Lakers 98 LA CLIPPERS 93
