IOC backs POA

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Nov 19: Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) has been given green signal by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to complete their ongoing term of four years from (2000- 2004) without facing a mid-term elections ordered by the Pakistan Sports Board under the new sports policy.

The sources close to the POA told Dawn Monday that the POA president Syed Wajid Ali Shah had written a letter to the IOC asking its advice in case a mid-term elections would have been necessary in the POA to implement under the new sports policy.

The IOC, the sources said, had advised the POA to strictly follow the constitution of the IOC as it strictly prevent the government’s interruption in the affairs of any national Olympic committee.

The PSB has fixed July 15 for the fresh elections of the POA as the national sports policy prohibits any candidate from retaining the post of president, secretary or treasurer of any federation and the national Olympic committee for the third consecutive term.

When contacted the POA secretary, Mohammad Latif Butt, confirmed that a letter from the IOC in this regard had been received but declined to divulge its contents.
