Browns complete sweep season series over Ravens

BALTIMORE, Nov 19: Rookie Anthony Henry tied a franchise record with three interceptions as the Cleveland Browns completed a sweep of their season series against the Baltimore Ravens with a 27-17 triumph Sunday.

Jamel White’s one-yard run with 4:02 left capped a 12-play, 68-yard drive which included 47 yards on the ground against the league’s top run defense.

The Ravens had cut their deficit to 20-17 with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter when Matt Stover split the uprights from 42 yards away to set an NFL record by kicking a field goal for the 36th straight game.

But the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens (6-4) failed to overcome four interceptions and a fumble by Elvis Grbac.

The Browns defense also ruled Oct 21 in a 24-14 home victory, grabbing seven sacks, two interceptions and a fumble.

Owner Art Modell moved the Browns’ storied franchise to Baltimore five years ago, renaming them the Ravens.

The Browns were resurrected as an NFL franchise in 1999 and had lost the four previous meetings with Baltimore before this season, the last three by a combined score of 97-16.

Baltimore lost for the first time in eight games at home.

In Green Bay, Brett Favre threw three interceptions and lost a fumble as the Packers suffered a surprising 23-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Chris Chandler passed for 352 yards and two touchdowns for the Falcons (5-4), who have won three of their last four.

A three-time NFL Most Valuable Player, Favre endured one of his roughest outings against the team he started with.

Favre, selected in the second round of the 1991 draft by the Falcons, spent one season with them before being dealt to Green Bay.

Favre went 16-of-29 for 262 yards and two touchdowns.

The Packers (6-3) lost for the first time in five home games this season.

Starting strong safety LeRoy Butler suffered a broken left shoulder blade in the second quarter and is out indefinitely.

In St Louis, Kurt Warner threw for 401 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams beat the New England Patriots 24-17.

Marshall Faulk, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player, accounted for 153 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (8-1), who have the league’s best record and remained one game ahead of San Franciso in the NFC West.

Tom Brady went 19-of-27 for 185 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for New England (5-5).

In New Orleans, Aaron Brooks completed 19-of-22 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead the Saints to a 34-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Joe Horn caught eight passes for 148 yards and rookie tight end Eddie “Boo” Williams had a pair of touchdown catches. Williams had just three catches in three games for the Saints.

The Colts’ Peyton Manning threw for 262 yards and a TD with one interception.

In Cincinnati, Derrick Mason returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown and the Tennessee Titans beat the Bengals for the seventh straight time, 20-7.

Mason has been slowed by injuries this season after setting an NFL single-season record for all-purpose yards with 2,690 in the 2000 campaign.

The Titans were coming off a wild and emotional 16-10 loss to the Ravens Monday night.

In Miami, the Dolphins turned the ball over five times and lost to the New York Jets for the eighth straight time, 24-0.

“They have to start thinking after eight in a row if they can beat the Jets,” Green said.

The Jets (7-3) took first place in the AFC East, leading Miami (6-3) by a half game.

Jay Fiedler was intercepted three times and two of them resulted in Jet touchdowns — a 60-yard return by cornerback Aaron Glenn and a 63-yarder by safety Victor Green.

In Oakland, Jerry Rice caught eight passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead 20-yard score with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter, as the Raiders posted a 34-24 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

The NFL’s all-time leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns, Rice also caught scoring passes of 12 and 30 yards and has 38 receptions for 637 yards and nine touchdowns in five career games against San Diego.

Rich Gannon threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns, also connecting with Tim Brown on a 10-yard scoring play.

The Raiders (7-2) extended their regular season home winning streak to 10 games and remain tied with Pittsburgh for the best record in the AFC.

In Pittsburgh, linebacker Joey Porter caused a key fumble late in the fourth quarter and Kordell Stewart accounted for 317 total yards and two touchdowns as the Steelers opened some breathing room atop the AFC Central with a 20-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In Tampa, Martin Gramatica hit the right upright on a potential game-tying 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play, allowing the Chicago Bears to escape with a 27-24 victory over the Buccaneers.

Marty Booker had touchdown receptions of 28, 44 and 66 yards for the Bears (7-2), who moved into first place in the Central, one game ahead of Green Bay.

Brad Johnson established a team record for completions, going 40-of-56 for 399 yards and two interceptions for the disappointing Bucs (4-5), who fell back below the .500 mark.

In Charlotte, Jose Cortez kicked a 26-yard field goal 4:41 into overtime as the San Francisco 49ers recorded a 25-22 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Jeff Garcia marched the 49ers 66 yards for a touchdown and a two-point conversion after John Kasay booted a 28-yard field goal with 1:52 left in regulation for Carolina.

Garrison Hearst rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries for the Niners (7-2).

It was San Francisco’s second win over Carolina (1-9) this season after dropping the previous four contests since ex-Niner coach George Seifert took over the Panthers.

In Denver, replacing injured starter Tony Banks (concussion), Kent Graham threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, the second with 2:48 left, as the Washington Redskins extended their winning streak to four games with a 17-10 come-from-behind victory over the Broncos.

Graham threw for 123 yards on 12-of-18 passing.

At Buffalo, Shaun Alexander scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter and Rian Lindell kicked three field goals, including a clinching 51-yarder, as the Seattle Seahawks handed the Bills their fifth straight home loss, 23-20.

In Dallas, Ryan Leaf had two interceptions returned for touchdowns and also lost a fumble as the Cowboys suffered a 36-3 rout to the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles.

In Arizona, Jake Plummer completed 21-of-33 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinals (3-6) posted a 45-38 victory over the winless Detroit Lions (0-9).
