DETROIT, Nov 17: Steve Yzerman and Luc Robitaille each scored twice to move up the NHL all-time goals list and Brett Hull hit a milestone as the league-leading Detroit Red Wings beat the Minnesota Wild 8-3 on Friday.
Yzerman had a powerplay goal, a short-handed tally and an assist to help Detroit build a 5-0 lead through two periods and chase Minnesota goalie Dwayne Roloson from the net.
His 650th and 651st career goals moved the Red Wings captain, at least temporarily, past Mario Lemieux into eighth place on the all-time list.
Robitaille’s 11th and 12th goals of the season gave him 602 for his career to move him into 12th place on the all-time list, passing Jari Kurri, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame earlier this week.
Hull, who is sixth on the goals list with 656, picked up two assists to reach 1,200 points for his career.
The Red Wings let their comfortable lead slip away as Minnesota struck for three goals in the first half of the third period, cutting the deficit to two.
But Robitaille, Brendan Shanahan and Boyd Devereaux answered with three goals in a 1:53 span as Detroit pulled away for its league-best 16th win in 20 games.
In Denver, the Avalanche managed just one goal for the second consecutive game and Patrick Roy made it stand up again to record back-to-back shutouts for the first time in nearly 12 years as Colorado blanked the New York Islanders 1-0.
Roy stopped 31 shots, making 27 saves after the first period, to record his third shutout of the season and 55th of his brilliant career.
On Wednesday, Roy shut out Minnesota to end a personal seven-game winless streak and become the first goalie to record 200 victories for two different teams.
He had not recorded consecutive shutouts since February 3-4, 1990 as a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
Chris Osgood was almost as good for the Islanders, making 27 saves — 20 over the last two periods. But the Isles saw their season-high winless streak reach four games (0-3-1).
Shjon Podein scored the game’s lone goal at 14:16 of the first period when he put a wrist shot from the high slot past a screened Osgood.
In Buffalo, Viktor Kozlov scored twice in the second period and Trevor Kidd stopped all 31 shots the Sabres sent his way as the Florida Panthers blanked Buffalo 2-0.
Kozlov scored a powerplay goal at the 2:22 mark and doubled the Florida lead with just under two minutes left in the second.
Kidd made nine saves in the first period, 11 in the second and 11 more in the third to record his 18th career shutout.
In Edmonton, Josh Green and Anson Carter scored two goals each to lead the Oilers to a decisive 7-1 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks, but it proved to be a costly victory.
Edmonton lost leading scorer Ryan Smyth in the first period when he suffered a broken ankle. He is expected to be sidelined 10-12 weeks and could miss the Olympics for the Canadian team.
The durable Smyth, who was playing his 195th consecutive game, was third in the NHL in scoring with eight goals and 15 assists when he went down.
Tommy Salo made 27 saves for the Oilers, allowing only Alexei Zhamnov’s powerplay goal in the second period.
In Columbus, Serge Aubin and Grant Marshall scored in a 3:33 span of the third period to lift the Blue Jackets to a 3-2 win over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Atlanta goalie Milan Hnilicka made four of his 35 saves in overtime to preserve the tie. Nashville’s Mike Dunham made 25 stops, including two in overtime.
