KARACHI: Municipal emergency demanded

Published November 18, 2001

KARACHI, Nov 17: An NGO, working for development of parks and trees, and upgradation of environment, on Saturday demanded enforcement of “municipal emergency” in Karachi for immediate removal of garbage dumps in various parts of the city.

Speaking at a press conference at Karachi Press Club, Shahida Chishti, the SWT chief, called for immediate ban on polythene bags with greater focus on improved sanitary conditions.

She urged the governor and Karachi Nazim that instead of spending huge funds on major and otherwise un-useful projects, there was a need to conserve such funds and use the same for solving the basic problems first.

She hoped that the city government would also construct the broken roads and streets and the citizens will start getting clean water with the removal of sewerage from streets.

She hoped that city government would also cleanse the roads from dumps of garbage leading towards the splendid women sports gymnasium besides repairing them as well and also carry out massive plantation to control growing pollution and develop parks and trees.—APP
