Jockey Raees steals limelight with splendid treble

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 15: Jockey Raees Ahmed, stole the racing limelight at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting, when he rode home a splendid treble at the Karachi Racecourse Thursday.

The young rider began his winning sequence when he piloted Baby Face to victory, winning the five furlong sprint in the second race, beating the crowd fancy Aziz Love by two lengths.

Then partnering Golden News in the fourth event, in a big field of 17 runners, Raees rode the bay mare to a start to finish victory, as another favourite Magical Effect bit the dust.

Then reserving his best for the final event of the afternoon, Raees astride the grey gelding Leo, won a very close race from the favourite Dur-e-Yamen by just 3/4 of a length as three runners sprinted past the winning post locked in a close encounter.

Earlier in the sixth race on Bold Commander, Raees was beaten into second place, when the favourite Fast Enough, with Ghulam Shabbir in the saddle sprinted over the six furlongs in a smart time of one minute 18 1/5 seconds, on a slightly heavy track.

The two runners were engaged in a hectic battle for supremacy in the home stretch before Fast Enough drew away to win, much to the delight of the winning mount’s supporters.

As predicted in our columns, The Youngster Cup, for two-year-old colts and fillies was picked up by M. Shafiq’s chestnut filly Sweet Touch with Shahid Rehman in the saddle.

Seven lengths behind came Prince Khurram, followed by Chantilly Lace and Lucky Three.

The opening event was bagged by the bay colt Mark, this time ridden by jockey Ahmed, making it two winners in a row for owner Edward Chou.

Just in Fun, with Ahmed’s older brother Mazhar aboard was second, while Tanveer-e-Sehar and Atish Fishan completed the frame.

Al Khair ridden by jockey Tariq Mahmood, picked up the spoils in the third race of the afternoon, lowering the colours of another favourite Hamza Saheb. Shahdad Star collared Gold Money for the third spot.
