Darling Of The Royalty obliges on day of incidents
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Nov 15: The last Lahore Gymkhana races before the advent of the holy month of fasting (Ramazan) were full of incidents as two events out of a card of six had to be cancelled Thursday.
The start of the afternoon’s programme was very disappointing for the connoisseurs of the equine sport as there looked some “foul-play” in the first race.
The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards fined as many as 13 riding boys Rs 1000 (one thousand rupees), each for not allowing their mounts to run on “merit”! The stewards also issued warning to owners, trainers and riders, who were taking part in the day’s programme. It was announced on the public address system that if any one’s horse was not sent to perform on merit, he would be penalised and the event might also be cancelled.
Ironically, despite all that, the second event was cancelled before it was run. Rehmat Ka Phool, a chestnut mare, was installed as a favourite but as the contestants reached the starting gates and were to be boxed in, her odds started drifting upwards.
A group of punters staged a demonstration, inviting the attention of the LRC stewards towards this fact.
Taking congnisance of the matter, the stewards asked the owner-cum-trainer, Akhtar Mir to give his explanation about that. Sensing some “foul-play” behind all that, they cancelled the race before its start.
Before the start of the sixth and last race of the day, which was the feature event, almost all chance horses were withdrawn, leaving only seven final acceptors in the field. The stewards, who were dejected with that also, decided to cancel that race too before it was run.
The odds-on favourite mare Darling Of The Royalty put up a bold front-running performance to land the spoils in the first race. This chestnut mare, who had been beaten only two days ago on Tuesday putting up a dismal performance, this time beat the grey mare Grey Matter by seven-and-a-half lengths in an astonishingly easy manner.
The bay filly Mary Star finished third also by a big margin. At conclusion of the race, the stewards fined Rs 1000, each the 13 riders, excepting those whose animals occupied the first three positions.
The riders, with names of animals in brackets, who were fined were:
Azhar Hussain (Densee), M. Yasin (Papa Jan), Khalid (Lance Klusener), Munir Ahmad (Flaming Rock), Waqas Sheikh (Sahib-e-Sultan), Nadeem Ikram (Faizan The Great), Azam Hussain (Bull Dancer), Parvez Bhatty (Brown Bomber), Nazir Ahmad (Lucky Super Market), Kamran (In Command), Azeem Pervaiz (Dar’s Best), M. Jehangir (Garden Court).
Meanwhile, Horse-racing in Lahore will remain suspended during the holy month of fasting (Ramazan).
A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting of the LRC stewards held at their offices.
