KARACHI, Nov 14: Pakistan’s two-member junior golf team returned from Malaysia after competing at a junior-level tournament there, finishing at 24th and 76th positions, team manager Commodore Ejaz Rasool said Wednesday.

“Considering this was Pakistan juniors’ first visit aboard, I am satisfied and hope the exposure would help them in future,” Rasool told SADA.

Pakistan was among the eight countries to compete at the Malaysian Junior Classic 2001.

Pakistan’s Umair Javed had scores of 78, 76 and 83 to finish with a gross of 237 and ending at 24th placing, while Humzaul Haq Ansari scored 85 and 88 for 173 and could not play on the final day due to a cut in his hand.

Malaysian player Ben Liong won the event.

Besides hosts Malaysia and Pakistan, players from India, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Thailand took part in the three-day event played over 54 holes.

“Malaysia is far ahead of us because there are 200 golf course there in comparison to our 35 while their junior players are trained at the academy level,” Rasool said.

“Once our junior players get more exposure, they will definitely improve,” he added. —SADA
