ISLAMABAD, Nov 13: Wapda retained the Quaid-i-Azam National weightlifting championship crown in style Tuesday after accumulating 74 points here at the Pakistan Sports Complex.
The Wapda lifters won six gold and two silver medals to take the title ahead of Railways who had 49 points and Army who collected 29 and were third.
While a string of records were broken on the first day of this two-day championship, none fell Tuesday although Wapda’s Jamshed Arshad Malik, Hassan Aslam and Rizwanullah Khan Lodhi did make attempts.
Hassan, an international lifter claimed the 105 kgs category beating Kashif Hanif of Railways in a well-fought contest by proving his superiority in snatch and jerk. He had a total of 330 kgs while his rival totalled 322.5 kgs. Punjab’s Haroon Butt finished third with 280 kgs.
It was however, one-way traffic in the plus 105 kgs category with Wapda’s International Rizwan proving too good for the rest. He won with a total of 315 kgs. In second place was Wasif Hanif Butt at 290 kgs while Aqeel Javed Butt of Police clinched third position with 272.5 kgs.
Jamshed, another top Wapda lifter was unable to put in his best in the 85 kgs category although he won with a total of 312.5 kgs. He made two unsuccessful attempts to break the jerk record with 192.5 kgs. Haroon bin Rashid of Police finished runner-up with 285 kgs relegating Punjab’s Ghulam Farid to third place at 265 kgs.
Wapda’s Rahat Qayyum was the easy winner in the 94 kgs contest and totalled 300 kgs while Rashid Aslam of Army (287.5 kgs) and Railways’ Shahbaz Amin Malik (282.5 kgs) were second and third respectively.
Naveed Aslam Malik, the Wapda coach received the winners’ trophy.
Second placed Railways captured two gold and three silver medals while Army had to be content with two silvers.
