KARACHI: 3 ultrasound scans during pregnancy suggested
KARACHI, Nov 13: A three-day seminar on “Ultra Sound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology” organized by Sobhraj Maternity Hospital concluded on Tuesday.
Experts talked about modern research and latest developments in advanced countries to diagnose and detect infertility and retarded growth of fetus through ultrasound .
About 50 doctors, most of them being postgraduates from Sobhraj Maternity Hospital , Civil Hospital and PNS Shifa Hospital, attended the seminar.
According to ultrasound experts, infertility, tubal patency, uterine anomily and folicular growth and impotency can be diagnosed by doppler ultrasound.
The seminar focused on ultrasound discrepancies and measurements in growth restricted babies and the participants were informed that early scan helps to diagnose the problem.
They said it was necessary for gynaecologist to provide proper history of the patient to sanologist, so that the diagnosis could be done appropriately, rather than depending upon the ultrasound equipment operator .
Speakers informed that poor nutrition of mothers during pregnancy could not only lead to growth restricted fetus but babies after birth might be prone to diabetes, hyper tension, blood pressure and respiratory diseases.
A practical demonstration of ultrasound scaning techniques was held at the clinic of ultrasound expert Dr Mussarrat Hasan, situated at Hilal-i-Ahmar.
Dr Mussarrat said there should at least be 3 ultrasound scans during pregnancy and the best time for the purpose was around 18-22 weeks.
“Proper scanning techniques is vital for getting desired results” he added. He said ultrasound could be repeatedly done as and whenever required as it was found not to have harmful effects on the development of fetus.
He said it was not necessary to fill up the bladder for ultrasound after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Dr Mussarat Hasan said cervical incompetence might lead to repeated miscarriage; It should be properly evaluated with empty bladder preferably with a labial or endo vaginal ultrasound scan.
EDO health, city government, Dr Ali Nawaz Shaikh, said such seminars contributed significantly in enhancing overall proficiency and knowledge of doctors.
He stressed the need to upgrade service quality at hospitals and other medical units of the city government.
Speaking on the occasion, medical superintended Sobhraj Hospital, Dr Shabeen Naz, said that owing to lack of knowledge doctors were forced to seek help from operators of equipment or specialists.
Senior doctors of Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, including Dr Habiba,in charge of Neonatology Unit and Dr Zehra Ali, spoke on the occasion.—PPI
