LAHORE, Nov 13: An alleged robber gunned down a jeweller while over a dozen armed men shot at and injured two witnesses in separate incidents in the city on Tuesday.
The jeweller, later identified as Munawwar Hussain, 45, was dealing customers at his shop in main bazaar of Harbanspura when four armed men opened fire on him. The attackers escaped and the injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.
The family members identified one of the attackers as Waheed Butt. They told police that Waheed was released from jail hardly one month ago. “He was convicted on charges of motorcycle lifting.” Waheed had also deprived Munawwar of his motorcycle some eight months ago, they claimed. Munawwar had deposed against Waheed despite all threats and pressure.
The family members said that relatives of Waheed later requested them to pardon him. “We did so and helped Waheed secure bail by retracting the earlier statement recorded against him in the court,” they claimed.
Despite all assurances, the alleged robber killed the jeweller, they said.
The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. A case in this regard was registered with no arrest.
In the second incident, over a dozen armed men shot at and injured two witnesses on Turner Road near the Lahore High Court.
Okara union council No 101 councillor Amjad Tarar told police that his niece was kidnapped some months ago. They had come to the Lahore High Court in connection with the hearing of a case in this regard. Mr Tarar said that he and his family members were to record statements in the case but the judge concerned was on leave.
On their way back, he alleged, over a dozen armed men of the rival group opened fire, causing injuries to him and his friend Ghulam Nabi.
Both the injured men were admitted to the Mayo Hospital.
Mr Tarar alleged that his relatives chased and caught six of the attackers and handed them over to police. But, he claimed, that three of the arrested men were released by police. No case in this regard was registered so far.
