Slater sends reminder

MELBOURNE, Nov 11: Discarded Test opener Michael Slater scored a brisk half-century on Sunday to lead New South Wales to a seven wicket victory over Victoria on the final day of their Australian interstate clash.

Slater, who was dropped from the Australia team before this year’s final Ashes test against England, provided the national selectors with a reminder of his explosive hitting power with an unbeaten 58 at Melbourne’s Punt Road.

Slater’s half-century helped New South Wales post their second win of the season and move to the top of the six-team standings. Set 115 to win after Victoria collapsed to be all out for 193 in their second innings, New South Wales overcame a shaky start to finish on 117 for three an hour before rain set in.

Meanwhile, Mark Harrity took career best figures of five for 65 to lead South Australia to an innings victory over Tasmania in their match at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval.

The 27-year-old fast bowler claimed his second five-wicket haul in nine seasons of first-class cricket to take his team to victory by an innings and 40 runs as Tasmania crumbled to 167 all out.

Interstate champions Queensland had to settle for first innings points after their match against Western Australia in Perth ended in a draw.

Queensland made 490 to overhaul Western Australia’s first innings total of 432 but there little time left for either side to press for an outright victory.
