Over 25 booked for violence

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, Nov 11: Over 25 people were booked on the charge of violence and pelting stones on vehicles on Friday and Sunday in connection with their anti-US campaign.

At least 10 people blocked the GT Road near Alam Chowk after setting old tyres on fire here on Sunday. They smashed window panes of various vehicles and chanted slogans against the government and US-led attacks on Afghanistan.

During the Friday strike, over a dozen people had intercepted a wagon near Jandiala Baghwala on the Pasrur Road and smashed its windscreen. They pushed the driver, Asmatullah, out of the vehicle and drove away with it. The driver had reportedly declined to join them in the strike.

Police teams were conducting raids on their houses for their arrests.

SEMINAR: Farmers have been urged to make the country self-sufficient in agriculture by growing more wheat and paddy crops.

Speaking at a seminar held in Ghakkhar town on Sunday, Naushera Virkan tehsil council Nazim Sardar Tariq Raza and other speakers said handsome foreign exchange could be earned by exporting quality rice and other items.

They also stressed the government to provide soft-term loan to farmers.

BUSTED: Model Town police on Sunday claim to have busted a five-member dacoits’ gang, including its ring leader, and recovered looted goods and arms from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided their hideout near Model Town graveyard and arrested ring leader Abdul Ghaffar alias Goga, Sajid, Tahir, Asgher and Anwer.

Police told newsmen they had looted a garment factory in Faisal Town and killed its watchman on resistance a few days ago. They were wanted by police in various incidents of dacoity, robbery and other heinous crimes.

A case has been registered against them.

LOOTED: Outlaws looted three houses and a wagon besides several passersby in five strikes in and around the city here on Sunday.

Five bandits entered the house of Muhammad Rafiq in Ladheywala Warraich village by scaling its boundary wall. They held hostage inmates at gunpoint, collected cash, ornaments and valuables worth Rs300,000 and escaped.

Three dacoits barged into Abdul Ghafoor’s house on the Suigas Road. They made inmates hostage at pistol point, tied them with a rope, scooped Rs10,000 in cash, 10 tolas of gold, electronic goods and fled.

Four dacoits stormed into the house of Iftikhar Ahmad in Islamia Park, Civil Lines. Armed bandits took the inmates hostage, locked them in a room, gathered cash, jewellery, a TV set, wristwatches and valuables and escaped.

The wagon was on its way to city from Alipur Chattha when it was intercepted by five robbers near Bhandewala village. They deprived passengers of cash, jewellery, wristwatches and also beat up some of them on resistance before fleeing.

Half a dozen passersby were deprived by four robbers of their cash and wristwatches on the Nat Kalan Road, Ghakkhar town, when they were on their way home.

PASSES AWAY: The mother-in-law of tehsil city Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad passed away after a prolonged illness here on Saturday.

Scores of people, including Nazims, Naib Nazims and councillors, attended her funeral prayers.
