Steal the Show should run away with cup

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 10: Steal The Show, a three-year-old bay colt from Flaming Arrow out of First Lady, is on song to steal the show once again at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting, by lifting the prestigious Colts & Fillies Trials Cup, to be held on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Race Course.

Going over seven furlongs with six other contenders vying for the top honours, Steal The Show should register another victory for owner M. Shafiq, when the sixth race gets under way.

Only two weeks ago, the bay colt making an appearance on the racing track after nearly a year under Lahore’s champion jockey Shahid Rehman, raced over the same distance, scorching the turf in a splendid time of one minute 31 1/5 seconds, to register a hat-trick of wins for the proud owner.

Another fine bay colt Edging Ahead in the lead for most part of that race, was collared 200 yards from the winning post to finish second, three lengths behind with Gambling Princess, after a horrid start finishing third, a further seven lengths behind.

Taking that run into consideration, Steal The Show barring any mishap, should win the race for the mere asking, followed home once more by Edging Ahead.

All in all seven events have been drawn up on the racing programme, with five to be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs, one over six and the other over seven.

The first race will commence at 1.00 p.m.

Another Cup event is on the card, when 10 highly bred two-year-old colts and fillies will vie for the Youngster Cup in the fifth race of the afternoon.

Of the lot Sweet Touch a thoroughbred chestnut filly from My Noble Lord out of Willing Shoes, also from M. Shafiq’s stable could win this race again from Chantilly Lace and Prince Khurram.

Last week Sweet Touch making her maiden appearance, clocked an impressive one minute 4 1/5 seconds going over five furlongs, beating another impressive filly Chantilly Lace and Prince Khurram by 6 3/4 lengths with plenty to spare.

Although going a furlong more on Sunday, Sweet Touch is still fancied in our columns to win this race.

In the opening event with a big field of 18 runners going over five furlongs, Mark looks a good thing to win this event from Sahib Jan and Shinning Rock, although the bay colt owned by Edward Chou made a hash of things, finishing a very bad fourth in his last outing.

Sahib Jan under riding boy Zahoor Ahmed, did not look too keen to finish among the first three runners last week and the Stewards should take a note of the bay mare’s performance on Sunday.

The speedy Atish Fishan after two promising runs, failed to even figure on the board in his last outing. However if all goes well, the five-year-old bay horse should win the next event with the game Double Your Money and Tanveer-e-Sehar joining the fray.

The third event should witness a keen tussle between two older runners Raysham and Richy Rich. Raysham who loves to sprint into the front, could hold off the belated challenge by Richy Rich, with My Time grabbing the third spot.

The next event also should provide plenty of thrills for the racing fans, with Hamza Saheb and Satellite Star, two impressive winners in their last outings vying for the spoils. Although only four pounds separate the two in the weight scale, our fancy goes out to Mrs. Khalida Yasmeen’s chestnut colt Satellite Star with Feasible, a very bad fourth only last week, picking up the place berth.

In the concluding event, Welcome Shahtab although carrying 9-0 on her back, should cross the winning post ahead of game sprinter Golden News and Pari Pakar, a dark bay gelding grabbing a place chance in his last three starts.

Following is the field and our selections:
