ISLAMABAD, Nov 10: Pakistan Navy Saturday regained the National Rowing Championship crown after dethroning Army in the finals at the picturesque Rawal Lake.

Navy, who had 29 points, captured four golds and three silver medals to take the trophy ahead of Army who had three golds and four silvers.

Olympian Muhammad Akram took the day’s first gold for Navy in the single scull beating Army’s Javed Iqbal in a close finish.

Adeel Sultan and Shajar Abbas then teamed up to clinch Navy’s second gold in coxless pair leaving behind Army’s Maqbool Ahmed and Munir Ahmed.

Mohibullah and Masood Ahmed claimed the third for the sailors in the double sculls to strengthen their chances of taking the trophy.

The quartet of Muhammad Ishaq, Shaukat Ali, Muhammad Nazir and Azizullah then sealed Army’s fate in coxless four in what was the best race of the day.

Navy’s silver winners were Asad Khan (single scull), Azmat Javed and Muhammad Naveed Khalid (double scull), Qadeer Ahsan, Masood Iqbal, Ahmad Nawaz and Ayub Zafar (coxless four).

In the two-day championship, Wapda finished third while Sindh Rowing Club were fourth in a field of 10 teams.

Later Mumtaz Ali Khan, President of the Pakistan Rowing Federation gave away the prizes to the winners.
