KARACHI: US urged to stop bombing

Published November 11, 2001

KARACHI, Nov 10: Protesters at a demonstration on Saturday demanded an immediate halt to the US-led allied forces’ bombing on Afghanistan.

The demonstration was organized at the Press Club by a non-governmental organization — Takhleeq Foundation — in which its members and supporters from all over the province participated.

Expressing concern over a large number of civilian causalities in Afghanistan they demanded that the carpet bombings be stopped immediately.

They said that Pakistan’s joining of the coalition against terrorism had created tremendous internal stress and the country was faced with a serious crisis affecting the downtrodden and oppressed people.

The demonstrators said that the American led military response to the condemnable horrific attacks of Sept 11 had plunged the world into a cycle of violence with no definite end in sight. They suggested that the alliance should seek diplomatic channel to achieve its goals.

They said that the humanitarian aid coming from the West for the Afghan refugees was not enough to meet the requirements of the refugees. They demanded that military operation must be stopped immediately and all efforts be directed towards reconstruction of Afghanistan so that the refugees could return and be rehabilitated.
