KARACHI, Nov 10: Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan has approached the Sindh government for reviewing its policy of denationalization of educational institutions.
In a letter to the chief secretary, principal secretary to the governor Sindh and the secretary education, the city Nazim has stated that various teachers associations have contacted him and expressed concern over the government policy on denationalization of government schools and colleges in the province.
They have complained that while framing the policy none of them was consulted, therefore they were strictly opposed to the decision and demanded its withdrawal.
Naimatullah Khan has stated further that he is also of the firm view that this policy is not in the interest of teachers, students and citizens. Therefore, he has suggested the decision may be discussed at the cabinet meeting for its review or cancellation.
TREATMENT PLANT: A delegation of the Pakistan Tanners Association’s environmental committee led by its chairman Gulzar Feroz called on Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan and informed him about the progress of a treatment plant being established to treat effluent of about 200 tanneries in Korangi.
Fate of the under-construction effluent treatment plant is in doldrums on account of the financial issue between the KDA and the PTA is not resolved.
During the meeting, PTA members Mohammad Shafiq, Ahsan Elahi and Maj (rtd.) Qadir Ali informed the Nazim that 15 acres of land were allotted in 1995 free of charge as contribution by the Sindh government towards this plant and its possession was accordingly handed over to the PTA in 1995.
However, the KDA has demanded 40 percent of the total land cost putting the project in financial difficulties.
PTA members said that since the land was given free of charge, no budget was allocated for it in the project cost; PTA members are expected to raise Rs100 million for the treatment plant.
Naimatullah Khan promised to find a solution acceptable to both the PTA and the KDA.—PPI
