82 per cent schools without electricity
MULTAN, Nov 9: Eighty-two per cent primary schools in the district have not electricity.
In Multan tehsil, 180 out of 280 primary schools are not provided with power connection; in Shujabad tehsil only seven schools out of 110 have this facility while in Jalalpur Pirwala tehsil, only nine out of 40 have electricity.
In Multan where the severity of heat in summer is greater than in any other city of the Punjab, the absence of electricity in most schools create difficulty for students to concentrate on their studies.
When contacted, an officer in the elementary education office said non-availability of funds accounted for this state of affairs.
He said this year, the Punjab government would provided Rs10 million under the annual development programme for schools.
He said an amount of Rs1.4 million would be spent on the construction of boundary walls and the rest on new classrooms. He said nothing would be left to provide any other facility to these schools. — Nouman
