Celebrations claim four lives

QUITO, Nov 8: Four people died and 70 were injured as Ecuador’s celebrations for the country’s first ever qualification for the World Cup turned to tragedy, the Red Cross said Thursday.

The Andean nation exploded with joy after a 1-1 draw with Uruguay on Wednesday guaranteed them a place in next year’s finals in Japan and South Korea.

But within hours a man celebrating the result was killed in Quito after being repeatedly struck with a bottle in a street fight.
