KARACHI, Nov 8: The drivers of refuse collecting vans of different towns have made it a habit to dump garbage on roadsides in Surjani, instead of Jam Chakhro’s landfill site.

According to sources, the Gadap Town’s Nazim, Ghulam Murtaza Baloch, who made a surprise visit to the landfill site on Thursday, found drivers of at least 10 refuse vans busy in dumping garbage in the limits of Maymarabad Union Council, instead of designated landfill site of Jam Chakhro.

The Nazim was told by drivers that the contractors who buy the trucks of garbage ask them to dump the garbage on roadsides and once the garbage is thrown there, the contractors put it on fire after collecting bones, glasses and other material.

The Nazim warned the drivers of such vans against garbage dumping and said they would be handed over to police and disciplinary action would be initiated against them in accordance with the law.

The Nazim during his visit to the landfill site also found six employees absent.

Expressing his concern that a number of expensive machines and vehicles, belonging to SWMD, were lying out of order in the courtyard of Jam Chakhro’s landfill site, he said he had brought the issue to the notice of the City Nazim.
