Wiltord hat trick sinks United

LONDON, Nov 6: French striker Sylvain Wiltord plundered a hat trick in half an hour as 10-man Arsenal swept past an inexperienced Manchester United 4-0 in the third round of the English League Cup Monday.

Wiltord pounced after 15, 30 and 45 minutes and Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu netted a 66th-minute penalty to send the London club into a fourth-round meeting with first division giantkillers Grimsby Town.

United, who were beaten 3-1 by arch-rivals Liverpool in the Premier League Sunday, were left nursing their second defeat two days.

But United’s side contained four full debutants and seven players under the age of 21 as Alex Ferguson made 11 changes to the starting line-up in a competition he has traditionally used to blood new players.—Reuters
