Amjad, Taskeen bag gold

LAHORE, Nov 5: Army dominated the opening day of the 51st national cycling championship with Amjad Ali and Taskeen winning gold medals in the one-kilometre time trial men’s and women’s races Monday.

Amjad Ali covered the distance in one minute 14.70  seconds to clinch the gold.

Zulfiqar Ali of Wapda gave Amjad a tough time as he reached the finishing point just after 53 micro seconds. Mohammad Salim of Army got third position, clocking one minute 15.09 seconds.

In women’s competitions, which have been included for the first time, Army’s Taskeen claimed gold medal after leading from start to finish. She clocked one minute 41.65 seconds.

Taskeen’s compatriot Bushra earned the silver medal after clocking one minute 49 seconds. Atiya from Wapda, clocked one minute 53.17 seconds, to grab the bronze.

Only heat competition for the four kilometres race was held which had no attraction for the afternoon crowd, while both the finals were held in the morning which saw small number of fans.

The 100-kilometre road scratch race is the lone event carded for Tuesday. Six cyclists from each team will paddle off from Harbanspura’s. The race will conclude at the same point.

One-kilometre time trial (men’s):

1. Amjad Ali (Army), time: one minute 14.17 sec. 2. Zulfiqar Ali (Wapda) one minute 14.70 sec. 3. Mohammad Saleem (Army)  4. Haroon  Rasheed (Wapda). 5. Mohammad Asif (Railways), 6. Ghulam Hakeem (Railways).

Women’s: 1. Taskeen (Army) time: one minute 41.65 sec. 2. Bushra (Army) one minute 49 sec. 3. Atiya (Wapda) one minute 53,17  sec. 4. Shaban (Wapda) 5. Uzma Malik (Army) 6. Fouzia.
