KARACHI, Nov 5: An operation was launched on Sunday night to remove illegal terminals set up by the goods carriers in the old city areas.
The operation, which started with Chandbibi Road, Nanakwara and adjoining areas, covered a large part of the localities.
After the removal of encroachments, iron girders were placed at various points to restrict the movement of heavy vehicles in the localities.
It was the first major operation launched in the Saddar Town area. The operation continued into Monday evening.
City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, DCO Shafiqur Rehman Paracha and other officials visited the operation site. Saddar Town Nazim Muhammad Farooq Fariya briefed them on the operation and said the operation would continue for 15 days.
He said the action had been taken on a persistent demand of area people who were annoyed at the activities of goods carriers.
The old city area has been the hub of transport activity for the past many years and has become a public nuisance, with area people persistently demanding the shifting away of transport business.
A monitoring official of the operation, Zubair Mughal, told Dawn that girders were put up at seven points on Chandbibi Road and up to Nanakwara after the demolition of 70 illegal mini-truck stands.
He said the operation would cover a vast portion of old city areas, including Lea Market.
He further stated that the goods carriers had been allotted alternative plots in the new truck stand on the main Hawkesbay Road in 1994 on an undertaking that they would shift their business to the new site after getting possession documents.
“Although they were provided leases and possession six years ago, the transporters have been reluctant to shift their business there,” the official said.
