HOUSTON, Nov 4: Scott Verplank held on to his one-stroke lead after the third round of the PGA Tour’s $5 million season-ending tournament on Saturday.
Verplank, who shot a 68 for a 13-under 200, leads David Duval who came on strong in the third round, firing a 63 over the 7,220-yard course.
Tiger Woods carded a two-under-par 69 and is six shots back. Including ties, there are 13 players between Woods and Verplank.
Verplank, who played a bogey-free round on Friday, had a bogey on the par-four 18th and on three par-five holes that negated an eagle at the par-five ninth.
Duval’s eight-under 63 put himself in serious contention for his second Tour Championship title.
That would have been the best round of the day had Jim Furyk not broken the event and course record with a nine-under 62.
Furyk’s fantastic round featured excellent iron play and has him tied at 203 with David Toms, who fired a 64.
Duval had one of the most remarkable eagles in memory. At the par-five fifth, he pulled his drive into the rough. He blasted out through the trees with a 180-yard eight-iron and rolled in a 60-foot putt.
The British Open champion followed with his lone bogey but more than made up for it with three straight birdies on the front, another three in a row on the back and one more for good measure at the par-three 16th.
Duval is one stroke better than a six-player logjam at 202 that includes South Africa’s Ernie Els, Bob Estes and Kenny Perry, all of whom shot 65s.

CAMPBELL LEADS
MADISON (Mississippi): Chad Campbell fired three straight birdies to finish his round for a seven-under-par 65 for a two-stroke lead after the third round of the Southern Farm Bureau Classic Saturday.
Against a watered-down field, Campbell had a bogey but more than made up for it with an eagle and six birdies to finish the day at a 17-under 199.
Despite being the leading money-winner on the second-tier Buy.com Tour this season, the 27-year-old Campbell missed the cut at the U.S. Open in June.
Dicky Pride shot a 67 to move into second place at 15-under, one stroke better than Cameron Beckman and second-round co-leader Brandt Jobe, who carded a 69.
Carl Paulson shared the second-round lead with Jobe but managed just a two-under 70 at the Annandale Golf Club and slipped into a tie for fifth with Dan Forsman and Fred Funk at 203.
First prize is $432,000. Annandale is a 7,199-yard, par-72 layout.
