Arafat to make speech at UN on 10th
GAZA CITY, Nov 4: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will travel to New York on November 10 to make a speech at the United Nations, senior Palestinian officials said on Sunday.
He will make a brief annual speech at a UN meeting, the officials said, without giving further details.
The assembly’s annual debate of foreign ministers — usually attended by a number of heads of state and government — has been rescheduled for November 10-16, after being postponed because of the attacks on the United States.
Arafat will also travel to Belgium for a one-day visit on Monday, where he may meet again with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres as part of an EU-Mediterranean conference in Brussels.
The two men met twice Friday and Saturday at a similar conference in Spain, though no formal peace talks were held despite intense diplomatic pressure for the two leaders to put the stalled Middle East peace process back on track.
The Palestinian leader went on a tour of Europe last week, travelling to Italy to meet Pope John Paul II and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi before heading to Norway and Spain.—AFP
