Penguins beat Maple Leafs

PITTSBURGH, Nov 2: Jan Hrdina and Robert Lang each scored and had an assist apiece to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday.

Hrdina scored the go-ahead goal with 2:19 left in the second period. The tally came after Lang stopped a clearing attempt at the right point and shovelled it to Hrdina in the high slot. With a clear route in front of him, Hrdina slapped the puck past Curtis Joseph just inside the left post.

Lang brought the Penguins a 3-1 lead early in the final period, backhanding the puck over Joseph.

Penguins goalie Johan Hedberg made 26 saves to improve to 5-5-0.

Toronto took a 1-0 lead at 13:10 of the first period on a slap shot by Dmitry Yushkevich. Stephane Richer tied it midway through the second period.

In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Patrick Elias had two goals and rookie Andreas Solomonasson had the first goal of his career as the Devils beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-2.

Elias opened the scoring 11:01 into the game and added a power-play goal in the second period, giving him six goals and seven assists in five games at home.

After Elias netted his first goal, Salomonsson scored on the power play less than four minutes later, snapping Phoenix’s streak of 23 consecutive killed penalties.

Thursday’s results (home team in CAPS):

PITTSBURGH 3 Toronto 1

NEW JERSEY 5 Phoenix 2

ST LOUIS 4 Carolina 3

CALGARY 2 Columbus 1

VANCOUVER 4 Montreal 0

Chicago 3 LOS ANGELES 2

SAN JOSE 5 Atlanta 2
