LAHORE, Nov 2: “Those calling for strike on Nov 9 are doing a great disservice to the nation,” said Tehrik-i-Istiqlal president Asghar Khan here on Friday.

A complete strike would cost about Rs2.5 billion to the national economy and did not, anyway, damage the US. It was important to note that all those parties opposed to creation of Pakistan were now out to harm the economy and governance, he said.

Mr Khan asked the people to ignore the strike call because it would only harm Pakistan.

He accused the government of appeasing those out to create anarchy in the country. “The government should provide protection to those wanting to open their shops and do their business,” he added.

Meanwhile, the TI chief also appealed to the government to consider opening of Afghan border in view of the grave situation there.

“Four million Afghans run the risk of dying of starvation during the approaching winter unless provided adequate food and proper shelter. This should be a strong reason for the government to open the borders. Target of the bombing is Al Qaida network and not a common Afghan. Therefore, there is no reason for Afghans to suffer,” he said.

Mr Khan said in addition to tent villages established inside Pakistan to accommodate 300,000 refugees, more such camp cities could be established on self-help basis by the Afghans. This could be done with limited help from the United Nations. Donors have promised every help and it was time to save Afghans from this tragedy, he concluded.
