SRINAGAR, Oct 30: Pakistan and India exchanged rocket, mortar and automatic weapons fire across the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday night, Indian army sources said on Tuesday.

The sources alleged Pakistani positions began firing rockets and mortars across the LoC late on Monday in the districts of Karna, Uri and Nowgam. Indian troops replied with machinegun fire, they added.

“Intermittent firing in the three sectors continued throughout the night,” one source said, adding that the only reported casualty was a civilian on the Indian side.

The exchange of fire came the day after the head of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) warned of escalating tensions along the LoC.

“The situation will become more tense in the time coming, not only along the LoC but also in the whole of Jammu and Kashmir state,” UNMOGIP chief Hermann K. Loidolt said.—AFP
