Saints end Rams’ unbeaten run

ST LOUIS, Oct 29: The St Louis Rams are unbeaten no more after self destructing in the third quarter to hand the New Orleans Saints a stunning 34-31 victory Sunday.

John Carney kicked five field goals for the Saints (3-3), including the game-winning 27-yarder with one second left.

But that does not begin to tell the story of a game that went horribly wrong for a club that had a 6-0 record.

Even Rams quarterback Kurt Warner, who had been 17-0 as a starter in St Louis home games, could not overcome his team’s eight turnovers. Warner was picked off four times with three interceptions coming in the second half.

The Rams, leading 24-6, appeared on the way to a seventh straight win as they looked to avenge last season’s playoff upset by New Orleans. But the Saints scored 25 unanswered points in the third quarter.

In San Diego, Doug Flutie had the last laugh in a grudge match with his former team as the fleet-footed quarterback escaped a sack and ran 13 yards for a touchdown with just 70 seconds left to rally the Chargers to a thrilling 27-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

In Chicago, the stingy Bears defense gave up 31 points to the San Francisco 49ers but the home team still won 37-31 in overtime.

In Philadelphia, Charlie Garner and Zack Crockett ran for touchdowns and the Oakland defense contained Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in a 20-10 win for the Raiders.

In Baltimore, Randall Cunningham engineered a pair of fourth-quarter scoring drives, including a two-yard touchdown pass to Qadry Ismail with 4:07 remaining, as the Ravens rallied for an 18-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In Seattle, Jay Fiedler found James McKnight for a 39-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to rally the Miami Dolphins to a 24-20 victory over the Seahawks (3-3).

In Detroit, Corey Dillon opened and closed the scoring with touchdown runs as the Cincinnati Bengals blew a 15-point lead but recovered for a 31-27 win over the Lions, who fell to 0-6.

In Denver, Brian Griese threw a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter and cornerback Denard Walker returned an interception 39 yards for a score as the Broncos rallied for a 31-20 victory over the New England Patriots.

In Washington, Eric Metcalf returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown and receiver Kevin Lockett threw a 31-yard scoring pass as the Redskins rolled to a 35-21 victory over the New York Giants, who suffered their third straight loss.

In Dallas, third-string quarterback Clint Stoerner ran for a six-yard touchdown and Dexter Coakley returned a pickoff 10 yards for a score as the Cowboys (2-4) beat the Arizona Cardinals 17-3.

Sunday’s results (home team in CAPS):

BALTIMORE 18 Jacksonville 17

NY Jets 13 CAROLINA 12

Cincinnati 31 DETROIT 27

TAMPA BAY 41 Minnesota 14

CHICAGO 37 San Francisco 31 (OT)
