UNIONDALE (New York), Oct 29: Michael Peca scored on a breakaway with 1:35 left in overtime as the refuse-to-lose New York Islanders posted a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars Sunday to earn the best 10-game start in franchise history.
With 18 points on an 8-0-1-1 record, the Islanders are tied for first overall in the league and are the only club that has not suffered a loss in regulation this season.
Peca, one of several players acquired by the Islanders in the off-season, has helped spark a remarkable turnaround for the team that finished last overall in the NHL last season.
The 8-0-1-1 mark surpasses the 1982-83 Isles, who were 8-1-1 after 10 games, and the 1981-82 squad that went 7-1-2. Both of those teams went on to win the Stanley Cup.
Despite the success, the Islanders would prefer a little less drama after going into overtime for the fourth straight game and for the fifth time in the past six.
On the game-winner, defenseman Kenny Jonsson sprung Peca on the breakaway and he beat goaltender Marty Turco high over the left shoulder.
Alexei Yashin, another new Islander, came up with the tying goal on a powerplay with 6:10 left in the second period.
Islanders goaltender Chris Osgood, yet another key preseason acquisition, made 41 saves for his seventh victory.
In Chicago, Bill Guerin and Joe Thornton scored in the final 19 seconds of regulation as the Boston Bruins rallied for a stunning 3-3 tie with the Blackhawks.
Sergei Samsonov assisted on all three Boston goals — the last two after the Bruins had pulled goaltender John Grahame for an extra attacker.
In Carolina, Sami Kapanen scored a powerplay goal 93 seconds into overtime to lift the Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
In Pittsburgh, Milan Kraft scored with just 58 seconds left in regulation to lift the Penguins into a 2-2 tie with the Florida Panthers.
Jan Hrdina notched his first goal of the season on a powerplay early in the first period but Florida netminder Roberto Luongo held the Penguins at bay until the final minute.
In Anaheim, Martin Skoula scored with 6:35 left in regulation as the Colorado Avalanche rallied for a 3-2 win over the Mighty Ducks.
Eric Messier passed to Skoula in the slot and he put a low wrist shot past Jean-Sebastian Giguere for the game winner.
