Army, Wapda in final

LAHORE, Oct 28: Pakistan Army and Wapda reached the final after notching-up convincing victories over their rivals in the 10th national baseball championship here Sunday.

Defending champions Army chalked-up a 17-4 win over Police in the first semi-final, while Wapda thrashed Sindh 41-16 in the second semifinal.

Final will be played Tuesday. Police play Sindh for the third position match Monday.

Five runs including a home-run by Abdur Rahman helped Army to maul Police.

Army and Police failed to open their account in the first innings. Army scored three runs in the second innings, while Police failed to score yet in the second innings.

Army forged ahead mustering four points in the third and one point each in the fourth and the fifth innings. Soldiers accumulated five more points in the sixth innings when and scored three in the seventh innings.

Hapless Police could score a run in the fourth innings, added another run in the next innings, got two runs in the sixth innings.

Besides Rahman, notable scorers from Army were Fayyaz, Zafar, Riaz, Asjad, Sarfraz and Ashiq who scored two runs each.

For Police, Akhtar scored two runs, while Hafiz Mussadaq   and Lateef Moughal scored one run each.

Fine strike from Nisar and Rizwan, who scored eight and seven runs, enabled Wapda to register a facile win over lowly-rated Sindh.

The match could have ended in the fourth innings but resistance from Sindh in which they scored 11 runs to reduce the lead 15-18, extended the tussle to six innings.

However, Wapda again stretched the lead scoring five runs in the fifth and 18 in the sixth innings.

Besides Nisar and Rizwan, the main scorers from Wapda were Ajmal who scored six runs while Saqib, Basit, Amjad Farooq and Iftikhar got four runs each. Asghar Shah and Ali Shah added two runs each. Asghar also made a home-run.
