KARACHI: Pak Steel fruit farm ruined by neglect

KARACHI, Oct. 28 : The Pakistan Steel’s fruit farm, spread over 6 acres of land at its bulk water supply site, Pipri, has been destroyed due to mismanagement and negligence by the authorities concerned.

The lush green fruit trees/plants, which were laden with fruit, started drying up a year ago when the water supply was stopped with no apparent justification.

The fruit farm comprised hundreds of mango and olive and trees, besides pineapple, banana, Papitta and cheekoo plants.

“ Now hardly 20% plantation exists. The Pakistan Steel has never faced shortage of water and it is said to always have a good amount of even treated water in surplus.” said a PS officer.

He believed that the top management was totally unaware of the destruction of this asset, otherwise, he said, those responsible for this sheer negligence could not escape the action.

Press reports appearing early this year had also suggested that the Pakistan Steel high-ups should immediately move to save the fruit farm developed over years through restoration of the water supply, but no rectifying step was taken.—APP
