500 anti-globalisation marchers defy police

HONG KONG, Oct 28: Several hundred anti-globalisation demonstrators on Sunday defied police requests and marched down a busy Hong Kong road, but even though it was without incident officials might still prosecute the group.

“We are very disappointed that after a series of negotiations and talks with the organisers they (did) not take the other route, which is considered to be less obstructive to members of the public,” a police spokeswoman said.

But she said that since the number of marchers was under 500 and it was peaceful, police had decided to let it continue.

“That does not mean that we will not consider prosecution action,” she said.

The march was organised by Solidarity and Resistance to Globalisation (SRG), an alliance of 21 local groups that planned alternative activities ahead of the World Economic Forum East Asia Summit on October 29-31.—Reuters
