New Punjab governor takes oath tomorrow

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Oct 27: Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool has been designated as Governor of Punjab, and he would take charge of new office on Monday, an official announcement said on Saturday.

Earlier, Gen (retd) Safdar, tendered his resignation as Governor Punjab, a notification issued by the Cabinet Division said.

It was announced that Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool had tendered his resignation as chairman National Accountability Bureau under Section 6 of the NAB Ordinance 1999, which had been accepted by the president.

There is no announcement with regard to the new chairman of NAB. Maj-Gen Rashid Qureshi, Press Secretary to President, told Dawn that new chairman of NAB would be appointed in a day or so.

To a question, he said “most probably” an officer from Pakistan army would be appointed as the new chairman.

When asked that under the Supreme Court judgment on NAB law, it was held that next appointment of NAB chief would be done in consultation with the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Gen Qureshi said that requirement would be fulfilled.

The new NAB chief, he said, would be appointed in consultation with the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
