Fast bowlers on song at NSK

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 27: Pace bowlers had a field day in the Patron’s Trophy Grade-I fixture between ADBP and PWD at National Stadium here Saturday.

ADBP, containing several experienced campaigners, finished the opening day with honours belonging to them. At stumps, they had advanced to 167 for five after PWD had been bowled for 124 in their first innings.

Manzoor Elahi, the former Test all-rounder, showed glimpses of his old touch by spanking four boundaries in his unbeaten 30 off 37 deliveries when play was halted by poor light with seven overs still remaining.

The 38-year-old has so far dominated the 43-run unbroken sixth wicket stand with opener Inam-ul-Haq, who is batting with a well-compiled 60 in almost three hours. Inam’s 108-ball innings contained eight fours.

Atif Rauf, another ex-Test man, struck five fours in his 29 off 46 balls during a second-wicket partnership of 55 with Inam in 66 minutes.

PWD could had in better position as several chances were not taken. Luck also deserted them, in particular, lanky speedster Rajesh Ramesh. He was easily the pick of the bowlers despite giving away 54 runs in 9.3 overs. ADBP captain Zahoor Elahi was bowled first ball but Ramesh had overstepped the line.

Earlier, having been sent in on a pitch that demanded total application, PWD batsmen found themselves in considerable trouble against the moving ball, especially in the first session. At lunch, PWD had limped to 66 for six after openers Bilal Asad (14) and Azam Khan (17) had put on 33.

Wicket-keeper Mutahir Shah was last out for 26 — the highest individual score in PWD’ innings — when he was caught behind off Rao Iftikhar. The eighth wicket stand between Mutahir and Ali Raza (16) was the second best.

Manzoor Elahi, used intelligently by younger brother Zahoor, ripped through the middle-order batting to finish with three for 24 in 10 overs. Faisal Afridi also claimed three wickets, giving away 24 runs in nine overs while Rao Iftikhar and Tahir Mughal had two wickets each.
